Neo Ergo Review: Worth the Hype

Neo Ergo Review: Worth the Hype

The Neo Ergo is an amazing tented Alice keyboard that lives up to its reputation. Focused on ergonomics, the Neo Ergo is comfortable and surprisingly sounds great. In fact, Neo just announced six new colors last month (February 2025), and it is the only board in my collection that I am considering purchasing a second time—simply because the overall experience is that good.

When starting out in the custom mechanical keyboard hobby, I never found Alice-style boards particularly appealing. They looked awkward, and the learning curve for typing seemed steep. Additionally, most Alice layouts are relatively expensive, making them a risky investment for first-time users. However, the introduction of the Neo Ergo at an affordable price point changed that. The overwhelmingly positive community reception made it impossible not to give it a try!

Build Process: 10/10

This board is one of the easiest to assemble, rivaling the Mode Envoy. Though catch-ball systems have mixed reviews, Neo’s implementation works well, allowing for a screw-free top case removal. The build process is as follows:

  1. Prepare the left and right PCBs with stabilizers, plate, and switches.
  2. Install the silicone sock mounting system onto the PCB assembly.
  3. Attach LED diffusers on top of the PCB.
  4. Secure the PCB in place using magnetic pogo pins.
  5. Click the top case closed via the catch-ball system.
  6. Mount keycaps!

The magnetic pogo pin connectors are particularly impressive. They create a strong connection, ensuring a seamless and secure build every time. The catch-ball mounting system makes rebuilding effortless, requiring minimal effort while keeping the process entirely screw-free.

Sound: 8/10

Though I have no other Alice boards to compare to, the Neo Ergo’s sound profile is impressive. With an aluminum plate, Cherry switches, and no foams, it produces a clear and crisp typing sound. There is a slight hollowness around the board’s edges, but overall, it delivers a premium typing sound. The split spacebar is a unique feature for those accustomed to classic layouts. If you’re looking for a custom mechanical keyboard with great sound, this one stands out.

Feel: 10/10

Ergonomics play a major role in the typing experience. Initially, it took about three days to adjust to the angled hand positioning. I also had to relearn how to press the Y key efficiently due to the large gap in the middle. However, once adjusted, the tented design provided an extremely comfortable and natural wrist position.

The silicone sock mounting system offers a medium-soft typing experience—just the right amount of flex without excessive bounce. I could type all day without any discomfort, making the Neo Ergo one of the most comfortable boards I’ve used. If you’re looking for an ergonomic keyboard for long hours of typing, this is an excellent choice.

Aesthetics: 8/10

The simple and clean design language of the Neo Ergo is visually appealing. While it may not be the sleekest or most minimal board, its heft and curved tented sections give it a distinct look. The only downside is the bottom weight, which, while functional, does not add much visual appeal. For those looking for a stylish Alice keyboard, the Neo Ergo provides a modern and sleek design.

Design: 9/10

Neo focused on ergonomics and usability with this design. The catch-ball case system and magnetic pogo pin connectors make assembly and disassembly incredibly simple. The board’s layout and mounting system work seamlessly to create a user-friendly experience. For its price, the design choices are outstanding. If you’re after an affordable Alice keyboard with a premium feel, this is a great option.
